YOUTH SKILLS COMPETITIONS

Being the largest provider of vocational education and training in Hong Kong, Vocational Training Council (VTC) is obligated to promote vocational education and training.  Youth Skills Competition is one of the unique promotional activities being organized by the VTC to achieve the objectives. There are 3 Youth Skills Competitions that VTC being highly involved, namely, Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition; Guangzhou/ Hong Kong/ Macau Youth Skills Competition and WorldSkills Competition.

 

HONG KONG YOUTH SKILLS COMPETITION

The Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition (HKYSC) is a multi-disciplinary event first held in 1996 and thereafter every other year. The Competition is jointly organised by the Vocational Training Council, the Clothing Industry Training Authority, the Construction Industry Council and the Industrial Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with strong support from industry, commerce, and tertiary institutions.

 

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition are as follows:

n               To enhance the social status of skilled workers

n               To encourage young people to embark on a career in industry and commerce

n               To encourage young people to excel in their respective trade or occupation

n               To select competitors to represent Hong Kong to compete in the WorldSkills Competition, Guangzhou/ Hong Kong/ Macau/ Chengdu Youth Skills Competition, etc.

 

FORMAT OF COMPETITION
The Competition is conducted in the form of practical tests. Test papers are set in Chinese or English as appropriate.

If the number of applications far exceeds the available testing capacities, a screening test will be conducted to short-list candidates for the Competition.

 

ELIGIBILITY
A competitor should be:
- aged 21 or under (except for Mechatronics where the age limit is 24)
- a permanent resident of Hong Kong; and
- able to apply his/her skills and knowledge to the trade he/she applies for.

Prospective competitors may either apply by themselves, or be nominated by their employers or educational/training institutions.

 

DURATION
The duration of the Competition is about one to three days of practical work.

 

VENUE
The Competition is conducted in suitable places designated by the organizer.

 

FEE
No application fee is required.

 

AWARDS
The champion and the two runners-up in each trade will each receive a medal, a prize and a certificate.

GUANGZHOU/ HONG KONG/ MACAU/ CHENGDU YOUTH SKILLS COMPETITION

Guangzhou/ Hong Kong/ Macau/ Chengdu Youth Skills Competition is a biennial regional competition co-organised by the 4 participating cities. The competition also aims to promote the status of the young tradesmen and also provides an excellent platform for exchange of skills and technical know how.

 

The biennial event will be held in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau and Chengdu in rotation in several trades jointly decided by the four regions.

 

 

WORLDSKILLS COMPETITION

Brief History of WorldSkills International

The WorldSkills International, formerly known as the International Organisation for the Promotion of Vocational Training (IVTO), aims to promote:

n           vocational training and education;

n           the free exchange of information on all matters of vocational training;

n           the exchange of experience of young professionals and training staff with member countries; and

n           the social status of professional staff and vocational training generally.

 

The WorldSkills Competition (WSC), formerly known as the International Youth Skills Olympics (IYSO), is the major event of the organisation.

 

Hong Kong's Participation in WSC
Hong Kong participated for the first time in the 34th IYSO in 1997 in St. Gallen, Switzerland,

1999        35th WorldSkills Competition held in Canada

2001  36th WorldSkills Competition held in Korea

2003  37th WorldSkills Competition held in Switzerland

2005        38th WorldSkills Competition held in Finland

2007  39th WorldSkills Competition held in Japan

2009  40the WorldSkills Competition held in Canada.

 

Results in the WorldSkills Competitions
Hong Kong has been participating in the WorldSkills Competitions since 1997. Despite the high standard of the competition and excellent performances of competitors from all over the world, Hong Kong continued to achieve brilliant results and got a Gold Medal in Jewellery trade in 2005.  The successful results of the past competitions are as follows:
